Mares
Molly
My son Joel had outgrown his seriously cool tank of an East Cape coloured pony and it was time to look for a replacement. The bar had been set very high by Beau and there were a whole lot of boxes that needed ticking as we considered our options. Among those boxes were a couple I added – the horse needed to be a mare and she needed to be of a quality that I would choose to be breeding from in the future.
Joel had expressed an interest in Shires and finally one day, there she was, the horse that might just tick all those boxes. A big gangly 2 year old that until 6 months earlier had been running wild on a back block somewhere. We were going to need to buy Molly sight unseen, and Joel took a bit of convincing, but my gut instinct was that she was the one.
Molly unloaded off the truck along with all of her ability to make 15.2hh look more like 17hh. She was wearing a rope halter with a long piece of plaited baling twine attached. Reminding me of the words of the previous owner ‘she’s good once you’ve caught her but she’s not easy to catch’. If you had asked me for one word to describe Molly then it would have been ‘wary’.
Since that day we have watched Molly grow into a stunningly beautiful mare. She has the kindest eye and a way of capturing your heart. Still very much Joel’s horse and happy to do anything for him, she takes time to trust but is well worth the effort it takes. I adore this horse.
Molly is the queen bee here and we could not ask for a better boss mare. Very kind with her herd members she rules the roost with only a look. Molly has had 2 foals so far and while we are very much looking forward to more in the future, we are currently enjoying some time with her under saddle.
